In April 1973, representatives of various transport companies met to jointly commission a modern light rail car. In January 1974 the first 30 vehicles were ordered. Up to the mid-nineties more than 12 different transport companies built more than 350 urban railway wagons as 6-axle or 8-axle vehicles. Numerous transport companies still use the type M urban railway car today.
